USICE announced more audits in one day alone today than it did in all of the previous fiscal year. Employers choosing to hire illegal immigrants or persons without a currently valid employment authorization can get in serious trouble if the audit catches such activity. The biggest risk is to employers that don’t even know that they have someone in their workforce that recently lost employment authorization (expired visas, changing visa status, Etc.). The extent of the details of the audit are not available at this time. It is hard to tell how detailed USICE will get at each employer site and what information they will cross reference with that I-9’s that get audited.

In my opinion, it’s an excellent move! There is no point establishing visas, laws, Etc. if it can’t be enforced. IRS audits on taxes are perhaps the biggest reason why businesses take the time to file taxes correctly. Similarly, the fear of a traffic ticket keeps our roads safe. Unfortunately, there is no such auditing of visas at employer locations so hundreds of businesses and individuals get away with it. I’d say this move is a step in the right direction…

The list of businesses is not available at this time..
